Happy meals

Saturday, September 23, 2006

Darrin pointed out that I've eaten the same breakfast in-studio almost every day since we started the show in September 2004. This consists of a pita folded in half with peanut butter spread liberally inside. Even as my coffee consumption tripled, the same pita has travelled through me daily. He's right. My snacks are completely predictable and I've eaten the same lunches and dinners for as long as I can remember.

I realized that the mundane meals must have something to do with the point of purchase. I've been visiting the same grocery store in London every other week for almost two years. I coast through the isles with the stealth of a reef shark; gobbling up the same 60 items with routine precision. It's a culinary auto-pilot.

Last night I bucked the tradition and went to a completely different store. Nothing was as I expected and the whole process took twice as long. The catch was that I wasn't allowed to buy anything that I'd bought in the previous six months. A bonus point was given if the item had never seen my kitchen shelf. The pita was replaced by instant oatmeal. Cheddar became Havarti and chicken became peppered steak. The list continues but I promise that when I unloaded 9 plastic bags, there were more than a few items that left me scratching my head.

The first person who knows what to do with a jar of Tandoori paste and a box of kosher crackers gets to come over for lunch. Please bring pitas.
