Relationship Hindsight

Sunday, June 01, 2008

Do you ever wonder if you would have dated your partner, if you knew then, what you know now? In the article “ Relationship Hindsight”,by Dr. Robert Unger,  we explore  whether or not you would be with your partner due to things you did or didn’t know then and now.

In relationships we usually make up mental checklists of what we consider important in a partner. We consider if they have the same interest, values, religious background, financial stability and life goals.

Once a relationship is established, the goal is mainly to have a fun loving relationship, but as time goes on and we learn more and more about our partner, things can change, for the good or bad.

Look ahead a few years-- you have a family, life is pretty good, you have had to deal with some stressful situations. Throughout all this time, you are constantly learning about each other and growing as individuals.

The more you learn about your partner and how they react, will either change your relationship negatively or positively.

When deciding to commit to a relationship, it means we are willing to work at it. The question isn’t whether or not you love them, it is- is it worth the effort?

Dr. Unger points out that it is very important to discuss issues as soon as you feel something is different.

Communication is the answer.
